A Friendly Addition to the Workspace - The Robot Clock
Ever feel a sense of discomfort when thinking about about the time? Looking at a clock could feel daunting, especially when you're just woken up. Have no fear because the robot clock is here to get you feeling comfy and ready to work.
In Gary Hustwit's documentary, Objectified, a designer who goes by the name of Karim Rashim, mentions the evolution of cameras and how the shape of the camera has not changed. This reminded me of clocks and how the typical shape of a clock is either a rectangle or a circle. His passion for designing objects that represent the digital age has inspired me to craft a clock that goes beyond the constraints of conventional form.
I figured that a cute design would make the user feel more comfortable with having a clock nearby. After all, time is everything in life and it could cause a lot of worry. So a design that makes thinking of time a little more relaxing, could possibly make someone's day. It also gives it more character and will stand out from regular clocks, which reinforces the idea of leaving some sort of footprint, as Karim suggests. It makes people who don't care about design, suddenly form an interest.
The robot-like design is inspired by the progression of technology in our modern day. Robots become more prevalent as the days go by. A lot of robots portrayed in the media are terrifying, which stigmatizes them, but robots could be helpful as well. By designing a friendly robot, people will associate a warm and fuzzy feeling with something that could wipe out the entire human race.
So you might be wondering, why have I included an analog version of the clock? Isn't that too outdated? Although most people are used to seeing digital clocks nowadays, there is still a charm to having the good old ticking machine run everyday.
I have included a switch just in case the user wants to save battery power and isn't at home to see their cute clock. If you prefer analog clocks over digital ones, you don't have to have the battery running. It could also be an accessory they have in their car just like those bobble head figures but maybe it's best to keep it at home or in the office as you don't want to get distracted while driving.
Last but not least, there is a pencil holder for easy access. Working is associated with clocks, and will always be. So why not feel motivated to get out that pencil in case you have something to write about. Even a quick note or checking off a to-do list while staying on time feels good in life.
Overall, this clock is surrounded by a positive aura and that is almost as essential as the function itself. Designing this object has made me think that I want my work to make some sort of emotional impact. Hella Jongerious adds features that most people would deem useless but she does them anyways. The design I have created has many useless features that would cost more if mass produced, similar to how Tesla has to monitor resources down to the penny. For example, a sticker would add no value and would interfere with a calculated budget. However, that sentimental value really sticks.
On second thought, I should have made the robot have a backpack to hold pencils.
