Giving Life to Animals - Origami by Hoang Tien Quyet (Papercraft: Research)

Origami Animals

Origami is a Japanese artform that has been around for thousands of years and is an beautiful piece of culture that is practiced all over the world. Hoang Tien Quyet, a Vietnamese artist, creates origami, but adds his own unique spin on it.

Quyet applies the wet-folding method to curve paper, rather than solely relying on straight lines, which is a technique invented by a master named Akira Yoshizawa. To use this technique, you must ensure the paper is a bit moist for the effective curves, and thick because regular paper is too fragile. He also adds personality and character to these animals by playing around with their poses.

In addition to the animals, Quyet also expands his subject by creating plants, objects and human figures. There is also a sense of realism because of the round features that can only be done effectively with wet-folding. The level of complexity and precision really shows how much care and practice he has put into these.

The reason why this art stood out to me were the material and aesthetics. It is interesting to see something intricate be made from a medium as simple as paper. This also reminded me of how aerospace engineers use origami techniques to create space telescopes, which I find fascinating. It further reinforces how versatile origami can be since it can be used to represent anything.

In addition, Quyet's animals appealed to me because of how elegant the shapes are as the curves and angles really work in harmony. The visuals give a calm and serene vibe as well as a rich and vibrant feel to it, which is enhanced by the use of varying coloured paper. Overall, Quyet's ability to give life to his creation really stands out to me.
